Virtual Restaurants are Gobbling Market Share
When you place an order for delivery to your home or office, does it really matter where the food comes from? As long as the taste and quality are there and the delivery is fast, is it really that significant? What if one location were to produce several different styles of cuisine under several different names, all in the same place?
This is the thought process behind the growing “virtual restaurant’ industry. Exactly how much of the market virtual businesses and delivery in general currently own or will own in the future is not clear, but they are growing.
According to Nations Restaurant News, “More than 80 percent of publicly traded restaurant chains, not counting pizza chains that already deliver, are at least testing delivery at the moment…..”
Even Uber has gotten in the game. If you google “UberEats” for news today, you’ll see headlines like these:
- UberEATS launches in Bakersfield Monday
- UberEATS launches in Sarasota with 50-plus partner restaurants
- EXCLUSIVE: UberEATS is finally coming to Vancouver
And the Chicago Tribune reported recently in “9 restaurants, 1 kitchen, no dining room — virtual restaurants open for online delivery” that Green Summit Group projects $18 million in sales across all it’s properties. So virtual restaurants are here and we don’t see any reason they won’t continue to succeed.
Does this mean people will stop going out to eat? We think not. But restaurateurs may want to consider developing some options for the future including growing delivery services. And growing their food options.
