Children in Restaurants – Good for Business or Not?

Everyone has a horror story about being annoyed by a rambunctious child in a restaurant, and probably one of the most difficult decisions a restaurateur  must make is whether to permit children or ban them. Obviously a lot has to do with the size, clientele, and ambiance of the eatery, but whatever policy decision is made some people will be happy and others will be not so happy.

Some restaurants that don’t allow children are re-thinking policies because studies show the millennial generation is eating our more, and they are bringing their kids with them. According to Money Magazine, millennials are spending more on groceries, restaurant orders, gas and cellphone bills than older generations are. They are spending less on cable TV because they’re going out more and spending more money and more time to be online.

It may be possible that kids are better behaved in restaurants for this same reason. It seems like kids are getting connected with cell phones and tablets at younger ages and many parents are happy to let their children play with an iPad rather than run around a restaurant. Menus for kids are being revised in recent years to include less sugar, so maybe that’s what is helping a general trend towards better behavior. Fewer sugar-fueled energy blasts!

If a restaurant does allow children, they might as well make them comfortable. Clean, sturdy, safe booster seats, high chairs, and infant cradles can help keep everything running smoothly, and we have a great selection in our Youth Seating Section on our website.
